Cognitive Remediation

As a trained specialist in Clinical Neuropsychology, Dr. Gabrielle Stutman is skilled at helping people whose cognitive functioning is compromised. Cognitive difficulties can emerge from an age or illness-related neurological decline, a head injury, Attention Deficit or Learning Disability, or even from emotional problems such as anxiety and depression. Whatever the source of your problem, you are likely to experience it as a deficient memory, difficulty getting organized, difficulty controlling your behavior (like difficulty with getting things done on time), your emotions (like angry outbursts), or just making your mind work the way you feel it should.

Dr. Stutman explains: “The process begins when you make an appointment for a 45-minute initial meeting. I’ll ask what you want help with. Then, after listening to your answer, and perhaps some additional clarification, we’ll discuss how it might best be addressed, and decide whether to work together.”

Cognitive Remediation targets your complaint. You might learn exercises or other techniques to strengthen a weak area, or tools to use so you can make the most of what you have. Sometimes a strong area of functioning can be taught to take over for a weaker one. These and other interventions can make a big difference in your ability to cope with life, love and work. It can also help to maintain and/or increase functional independence in a declining loved one.
